- Attention!! Your Dryer May Burn Your House Down!!
- What I mean by this is: There are several factors that can cause your dryer to catch fire.
- The first and most important is Annual Periodic Cleaning of the interior of your dryer, to do this properly depending on the make, model of your unit the drum may have to be removed to make lint removal easier.
- What causes this problem is lint build up inside the dryer, particularly on or near your element housing or burner cone. This must remain clean!! If your dryer has an access door at the front bottom you may open this and using a flashlight peer inside. DO NOT INSERT YOUR HAND OR TOOLS UNTIL POWER IS REMOVED. NOT HEEDING THIS WARNING MAY CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH!!
- You may then (if possible) use your vacuum hose to remove any lint you see. If you do not have an access door at the front bottom then you will need to purchase a Do It Yourself Manual from a Local Appliance Parts Dealer. There are two good ones that I know of: Johnstone Supply and Marcone Appliance Parts You will need both your Model Number and Serial Number of your unit.

- I have listed above the main cause of Dryer Fires, there is still another issue that will contribute to this. What else contributes to this is your vent running from your dryer to the outside. First off the limitations prescribed by most manufacturers is 29 ft maximum length with a few variations, these are for every 90 deg. elbow remove 3 feet from the total length of the run. Also to ensure maximum efficiency you want your run to be as short as possible. This means if your laundry room is located at the front of the house it's best to vent it to the front. ( I know you don't like this but efficiency is key as well as preventing fires). Use Non-Corrugated dryer venting material, this causes more lint than usual to accumulate in the vent system making it harder to clean as well. Use normal 4" inch dryer ducting smooth wall vent material with a vent hood attached to the outside of the home. Try not to use any kind of mesh system on the outside as this will clog and cause serious issues drying or possibly cause a fire. Use a vent hood with a Rodent Door to prevent birds nests and Rodents from accessing your house through this access point. Your venting system needs to be maintained as well, you should clean it a Minimum of Every Two Years. The dryer itself should be inspected and cleaned if needed every single year.

- If you seem to have long drying times, having to run a load two times through a cycle or even more, check to see if they are warm, if they are your venting is the cause have it cleaned using a reliable duct cleaning company. If your load is cold then you are having a repair issue with your dryer and you should call a reliable Appliance Repair Company to have it properly diagnosed.
- In the future when I have time after the summer overtime season ends I will post How To's on how to check for certain problems and their causes and what to do about them.
